CA Launches New Mobile Device Management Solution

TMCnet Contributing Editor

CA (News - Alert) has released the CA Mobile Device Management (CA MDM), an enterprise-class solution that helps in manage BlackBerry smartphones from Research In Motion (RIM). The CA MDM offers corporate IT organizations better management capabilities and user self-service. In doing so, it significantly minimizes security and compliance risks related to these devices. At the same time, TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) is also reduced.

Research firm IDC (News - Alert) has predicted that the mobile device management market will grow from $205.7 million in 2006, to $345.0 million by 2011. The growth is expected to be driven by the rise in the mobile workforce as well as the demands of managing the complexity introduced by mobile devices into the IT environment.

CA MDM offers a simple solution for the provisioning and ongoing management of mobile devices through existing over-the-air connections, eliminating the need to place agents on any device. The solution consists of a configurable self-service portal for end users, which enables them to register their devices, manage their passwords, and address common problems quickly and easily — without requiring the help of corporate help desk personnel. Additionally, it offers a Web-based console to integrate all core management tasks, such as security management, asset inventory, configuration management, policy compliance, and reporting for all devices across the enterprise.

Other main features of CA MDM include:

  • Utilization of BlackBerry (News - Alert) Enterprise Server IT policies to offer over-the-air (OTA) management from a Web-based interface, which includes device lock/unlock and data wipe to prohibit access to data on lost or stolen devices;
  • Automated role-based device security and configuration enforcement, as well as lifecycle management using Active Directory data;
  • Automatic disabling of devices on employee termination;
  • Customizable workflow for approvals, escalations, event management, and support processes
  • A Bulk Addition feature to help administrators release large numbers of devices in quick time

The CA MDM is highly scalable and has the capability to auto-discover thousands of devices in just a few hours. It also can be can be integrated with other CA solutions —such as CA Asset Management, CA Identity Manager, and CA Security Command Center — which will help in integrating BlackBerry smartphones with enterprise IT governance best practices. In addition, integration with Active Directory offers ongoing synchronization, monitoring, and automated reconfiguration to ensure device configuration and security policy compliance.
